About Sabasi

Built in Africa,
for data that matters.

Sabasi is a product of Open Institute, a non-profit organisation working to build open, informed communities across East Africa. We build tools that put data in the hands of the people who need it most.

Our mission

Fostering open, informed communities

Where citizens actively engage with transparent governments for sustainable development. Sabasi is how we do that, by making data collection and analysis accessible to anyone, anywhere, regardless of connectivity.

We started because most data tools are built for organisations in wealthy countries with reliable internet. The reality in East Africa is different. Field teams work in rural areas. County governments have limited technical staff. Researchers need to collect data in places no commercial tool was designed for. Sabasi was built specifically for those conditions.

Frequently asked questions

The most common questions about Sabasi, answered plainly.

Does Sabasi Survey really work offline?
Yes: fully. The Sabasi mobile app saves all responses locally on the device when there's no internet connection. As soon as a connection is available, everything syncs automatically to the cloud. Your team doesn't need to do anything manually. This is designed specifically for field work in rural areas, markets, and remote facilities.
What devices does the mobile app work on?
Sabasi Survey is available on Android. It runs on most Android devices with Android 7.0 (Nougat) or newer, including low-cost entry-level phones commonly used by field teams in East Africa.
Can I use Sabasi in Swahili?
Yes. The full Sabasi platform, Survey, Dashboard, Data Sources, and Public Site, is available in both English and Swahili. Field teams can collect data in Swahili, and administrators can manage the platform in whichever language they prefer. French and other languages are on the roadmap.
How does data get from the field to my dashboard?
Automatically. Sabasi has a built-in pipeline between Survey and Dashboard. When a field enumerator submits a response (online or once their device reconnects), it flows directly into your survey's data source and updates any dashboard connected to it. No exports, no re-uploads, no manual steps.
Can I combine survey data with CSV files on a dashboard?
Yes. Sabasi Dashboard's Data Sources feature lets you add survey datasets alongside manually uploaded CSV or Excel files. You can then use both sources in the same dashboard, mixing live field data with historical records or budget spreadsheets.
Is my data secure?
Yes. Data is encrypted both in transit and at rest. Sabasi complies with GDPR and the Kenyan Data Protection Act. You can also set role-based access controls so team members only see what they're supposed to see. The app lock feature protects mobile devices if they're lost or stolen.
How much does Sabasi cost?
Sabasi has a free tier for individuals and small teams. Organisational and county government plans are available with additional features, higher usage limits, and dedicated support. Contact us at hello@openinstitute.africa for pricing tailored to your organisation's size and needs.
What is Ask AI?
Ask AI is a context-aware assistant built into Sabasi Dashboard. You can ask questions about your data in plain English or Swahili, like "Which ward had the most incomplete facilities?", and get answers back as text, filtered tables, or chart suggestions. It understands your specific data fields, not just generic examples. It's read-only by design: it helps you understand your data without modifying anything.
Can I publish my dashboard publicly?
Yes. Sabasi's Public Site feature lets you turn any dashboard into a publicly accessible website at a custom URL (sabasi.mobi/your-org). You can share this with citizens, the media, or partners, no developer or web hosting needed. The site updates automatically as your data updates.
